2017 Large Scale Installation Class

2017 Large scale installation class on a Yorkshire flower farm

In September 2017 I hosted a large scale installation class at the beautiful flower farm of Holme Flowers and florists travelled from across the globe to attend. Held on an early autumn day there were plenty of beautiful flowers to work with. The uber talented Holly of Belle and Beau Fine Art Photography was there to capture the day.

We all congregated in The Granary for coffee, pastries and hellos, then we headed off into the flower field for any extra flowers the students wanted specifically to use, in addition to the vast selection we had already prepared.

After the flower field we set off back for the 'unveil' of the flowers and location for the class

The gorgeous, seasonal flowers all came from Holme Flowers themselves, Picked at Dawn and The Real Flower Company and were displayed on huge pieces of agricultural equipment that had been brought in especially.

The menu, place card and illustration for the welcome bundle were all designed and made by Hannah from Aelisabet Flowers.

After an initial demonstration of the mechanics and outlining my vision, we headed off for lunch in the amazing Holme Flowers Bothy (which they made themselves!). Lunch was the most gorgeous autumnal feast, made by Wendy, Sue and Jayne, the three sister who are Holme Flowers. The three of them run a working farm, a flower farm and are also amazing chefs and also happen to be some of the loveliest people I have ever met.

After we had filled ourselves with all the beautiful food and wine, we carried on with the installation. I took the students through how to give large scale designs movement, space and lightness of touch, whilst giving a huge impact. We worked through the process together and changed plans as we went, it was a very organic process. Then once I had created the framework and outline with foliage, the group all set to work on their own areas.

Because we were on a working farm, I wanted to keep the feel very agricultural, so we used the two horses for some images at the end. The ever so versatile Hannah of Aelisabet Flowers, then turned her hand to a touch of modelling, she is also a very accomplished event rider so it all just seemed to fit!
